Our mission is simple and in slow and steady stages.

Join our community → gain mutual support → grow comfortable enough to share stories and thus increase awareness → use the platform in whichever way you need.

… but did you know, there are times when women are particularly vulnerable?

According to recent research cited in a publication by The New York Times, women face greater risk of stroke with:

Anyone can have a stroke at any age

  • Pregnancy

  • Postpartum period after childbirth

  • Pre-eclampsia

  • Early menopause

  • Endometriosis

  • Lupus

  • Hormonal contraceptives that include oestrogen and progestin

  • Trans women taking oestrogen

There is also a proven history of gender bias in medical care and roles which are expected in women, who are more likely to be carers and provide more hours of paid and unpaid care than men. This makes women susceptible to many issues surrounding the before and after of stroke, and we want to contribute to changing that – so it can lead to quicker recognition, diagnosis and treatment and better screening for those women for whom may be a significant risk factor.

The Stroke Sisterhood seeks to address the unique physical, emotional and social challenges that women face during a stroke recovery journey – whether for themselves or somebody else – fostering a sense of solidarity and strength. Through education, resources, and advocacy, the community aims to raise awareness about stroke prevention, reduce stigma, alter attitudes, and advocate for better healthcare support for female survivors, female carers and females who feel silenced in an absence of communication.

By creating a network of compassionate peers, the community will help women rebuild their lives with confidence, resilience, and hope. We aim to put emphasis on the many elements of stroke, to empower and support women who have experienced a stroke and/or are affected by a loved one’s stroke experience by providing a safe and inclusive space for shared experiences, encouragement and healing, but down the line we hope to extend this community as a place to decompress, an enjoyable social hub to make friends, and a virtual area to stay connected as a dynamic.

It is an open book ready to be written.
